he Triangle Golf Challenge, in support of Triangle charities, held on Friday June 14, 2013 at UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, NC raised over $40,000 to benefit The Banks Foundation in its mission to assist families who are moving from public housing to private homeownership. The Banks Foundation also donated $3,000 of the proceeds from the tournament to Communities In Schools (CIS) of Durham, a local affiliate of the nation’s most effective dropout prevention model.
“Many of the students served by CIS are the first in their family to graduate from high school.  CIS’s programs connect students to resources and support systems to ensure they graduate and have a pathway to success after graduation,” said Elizabeth Levene, Interim Executive Director at Communities in Schools of Durham. “We are so proud to partner with and have the support of a wonderful group like the Banks Foundation.”
The Banks Foundation is now putting the funds to work, accepting grant applications for the 2013-2014 grant cycle to provide down payment assistance to families who have qualified to purchase their first home. The Foundation provides downpayment assistance to families who have received public housing or Section 8 assistance in the past, have entered into and completed a Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) contract or similar agreement, have income that is less than 80% of the area median income, and have qualified for a home loan. Grants average around $2000.
“The Banks Foundation has been a blessing to my family in a time of need,” said Ms. Tanesha Summers, a recent recipient of the Banks Foundation’s down payment assistance program who closed on her new home in November, 2013. “I am so thankful to The Banks Foundation for helping enable me to purchase a new home.”
